In early January 2019, the Danish Health Authority (Sundhedsstyrelsen) released a new national clinical guideline, which focuses on the choice between surgery, the so-called radical prostatectomy, and the option of active monitoring of prostate cancer.
The treatment of prostate cancer has changed over a number of years from a conservative approach to an increasingly active approach where a more substantial part of the patient group is operated. Prostate cancer develops individually, and in some cases very slowly. Therefore, over-diagnosis and over-treatment is a real risk.
In connection with the revision of the thesis plan, the National Board of Health noted in 2017 a considerable regional variation in the choice of treatment principle in prostate cancer.
In January 2018 the National Board of Health set up a professional working group, which was tasked with preparing a professional assessment guideline for radical prostatectomy in prostate cancer in order to reduce the risk of over-treatment and to minimize inappropriate variation in the treatment offered.
The academic search guideline was published in early January 2019 and has the character of professional advice. It includes recommendations for the organization of the healthcare entities, as well as recommendations for good clinical practice for health professionals involved in the decision-making process for the surgical treatment of prostate cancer patients.
