In mid-December 2021, the Danish Health Data Agency (Sundhedsstyrelsen) published the Health Care Classification System (Sundheds-væsenets Klassifikations System, SKS). The most significant changes include: 41 new diagnosis codes and 21 procedure codes were added. The newly added procedure codes concern mainly spine area and orthopedic procedures. The examples of the most significant changes are provided below. Some newly added codes in the orthopedics field include:
- KNCM39 Excision of synovial cyst in elbow/forearm;
- KNDM39B Excision of synovial cyst in hand;
- KNGM39 Excision of synovial cyst in knee/lower leg;
- KNHM39B Excision of synovial cyst in the foot.
Examples of newly introduced codes for the interventions on the spine:
- KNAM39C Excision of synovial cyst in the cervical spine;
- KNAM39D Excision of synovial cyst in thoracic spine;
- KNAM39E Excision of synovial cyst in the lumbar spine.
The Danish Health Authority updates the Health Care Classification System quarterly. It publishes the results on its website two weeks before the implementation, while the files with the changes are sent to the hospital systems.
The adjustments are subdivided into major and minor changes. Minor changes are mostly the text updates, which do not change the meaning of the term and do not require code closure. The changes are considered major if associated with implementing a new code or code closure.
