The purpose of the guideline is to provide knowledge-based national recommendations for the treatment of patients with brain metastases. The guideline focuses on oncological and neurosurgical methods of treatment for different patient groups, as well as the factors to be emphasized when selecting a specific treatment for the individual patient.
Danish National Board of Health has decided to update the National Clinical Guideline for Treatment of Brain Metastasis, because local treatment (stereotactic radiation therapy) has become more common in the treatment of brain metastases since 2014, and that the Working Group estimated that new research-based knowledge had been obtained in this area.
The following recommendations have been updated in 2018:
- Consider stereotactic radiation treatment after surgical resection in patients with single brain metastasis and moderate prognosis (weak recommendadtion)
- It is good practice to use whole brain irradiation, not stereotactic radiation therapy, in patients with 5 or more brain metastases each 3 cm or less and moderate prognosis (Good Practice, Consensus)
- It is good practice only after careful consideration to providing local treatment (stereotactic radiation therapy or surgical resection) for recurrence of brain metastases in patients previously treated with whole brain irradiation, as the beneficial effect is highly questionable (Good Practice, Consensus)
