In 2014 the Danish National Board of Health (Sundhedsstyrelsen) has published the National Clinical Guideline for the Treatment of Brain Metastases (full text of the guideline can be found here).
The guideline focuses on which oncology and neurosurgical treatments are relevant for the patient groups, as well as on patient-specific factors that determine the choice of treatment. An aggressive treatment strategy like surgery and radiation therapy may seem obvious. Conversely, these treatments are associated with the risk of complications, and therefore it is important that patients are carefully selected for the treatment they are most benefited from.
The background for updating the National Clinical Guideline for Treatment of Brain Metastases is that local treatment (stereotactic radiation therapy) has gained more space in the treatment of brain metastases since 2014 and that the working group estimated that new evidence-based knowledge has been obtained in this area.
Therefore, the National Board of Health today sends a new updated National Clinical Guideline in consultation. The purpose of the guideline is to provide knowledge-based national recommendations for the treatment of patients with brain metastases.
