Designation agreement on 22 reference centers for the treatment of 14 pathologies in Spain

During the last meeting of the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System in Spain, the different members reached an agreement by which 22 CSUR (Center, Services and Units of Reference) became reference centers for the treatment of 14 pathologies.

Below there is a list of the centers and the new pathologies that they are going to treat:

  1. Intraocular tumors in adults (Complejo Hospitalario Regional Virgen de la Macarena)
  2. Comprehensive assistance for patients with congenital heart disease (Complejo Hospitalario Regional Virgen del Rocío y Complejo Hospitalario Regional Virgen de la Macarena)
  3. Left Ventricular Reconstructive Surgery (Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón)
  4. Congenital cardiopathies (Hospital Clínico Universitario de Salamanca)
  5. Surgery for movement disorders (Hospital Universitario y Politécnico La Fe)
  6. Congenital metabolic diseases (Complejo Hospitalario Regional Virgen del Rocío)
  7. Rare neuromuscular diseases (Hospital Universitario 12 de October)
  8. Neuroblastoma (Hospital Universitario y Politécnico La Fe)
  9. Exstrophy-epispadias complex (bladder exstrophy, epispadias and cloacal exstrophy) (Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau and Fundació Puigvert I.U.N.A., Hospital de Sant Joan de Déu, Hospital Universitari Vall D'Hebrón, Hospital Universitario La Paz, Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre)
  10. Complex urethral reconstructive surgery in adults (Hospital Universitario de Cruces, Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre)
  11. Complex glomerular diseases (children and adults) (Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau and Fundació Puigvert I.U.N.A., Hospital Universitari Vall D'Hebrón, Hospital Clinico San Carlos, Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre)
  12. Hereditary erythropathology (Hospital de Sant Joan de Deu and Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón)
  13. Congenital spinal cord failure syndromes (Hospital Universitari Vall D'Hebrón)
  14. High-Level Isolation Units (UAAN).

Furthermore, the National Institute of Health Management (INGESA) has also initiated the processing of the Framework Agreement that will facilitate the acquisition of the equipment in the fields of interventional cardiology, interventional vascular radiology, interventional neurovascular, digital brachytherapy, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, PET-CT, SPECT-CT.

In January 2022, the Basque Office for Health Technology Assessment (OSTEBA) released an HTA report aiming to assess and compare the efficacy, effectiveness, and safety of the mechanical circulatory support devices most used in the healthcare setting for the treatment and prevention of cardiogenic shock, including Impella® devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

On December 2, 2021, the Digital Health Strategy of the National Health System (SNS) was approved by the Interterritorial Council of the National Health System (CISNS) with an endowment of more than €675 million within the Transformation, Recovery, and Resilience Mechanism of the Government of Spain. The Digital Health Strategy is expected to promote the SNS values such as equity, sustainability, and transparency and boost the transformation of the SNS care model in the upcoming years.
