Italian Ministry of Health will create national list of scientific societies that will produce national guidelines

Aug 2017

A list of scientific societies and technical and scientific medical associations appointed to release national guidelines will be defined in the next months by the Ministry of Health, following its decree issued on 2nd August 2017.

This action is connected to the Presidential law issued on 8th March 2017 with focus on the safety of care and professional responsibility. In particular, the law states that healthcare professionals involved in prevention, diagnosis, therapy, palliative care, rehabilitation, and legal medicine must follow recommendations defined by those scientific societies and associations registered in the official list developed by the Ministry of Health. When recommendations for the specific case are not available, good-practice indications must be followed.

The societies and associations eligible for inclusion on the list need to fulfill a set of criteria defined by the Ministry of Health:

  • Relevance at national level, with representation in at least twelve Regions or Autonomous Provinces, and links or collaborations with other societies or associations of the same profession, specialty or discipline;
  • Representation of at least 30% of professionals in the specialization or discipline or specific area/field not in retirement. For general practitioners, representation of at least 15% of professionals is required;
  • Constitutive act and statute publicly available defining all the characteristics of the society or association.

Societies and associations can apply for inclusion within 90 days from the date of issue of the decree while the list will be finalized and published within the following 120 days.
