The 2022 procedure coding system (NCMP-NCSP-NCRP) released in Norway

In September 2021, the Norwegian Directorate for e-Health released the procedure coding system for 2022. The coding system consists of three parts: NCMP for medical procedures, NCSP for surgical, and NCRP for radiological procedures. A total of 75 new codes will be introduced in 2022.

Eight new surgical procedure (NCSP) codes were introduced related to gastrointestinal procedures, men's health, assisted reproduction, plastic skin surgery, and intravascular lithotripsy (additional Z-code). Some examples are provided below:

  • KED01 Percutaneous endoscopic transvesical prostatectomy;
  • QBJ05 Other correction of loose or excess skin on the trunk;
  • ZFX04 Intravascular lithotripsy.

A total of 53 new radiology procedure codes (NCRP) were added concerning interventional radiology, diagnostic imaging, and radiology procedures in the following anatomical areas: peripheral vascular, cardiology, urology, gastrointestinal, obstetrics and gynecology, and neurology.

A total of 14 new medical procedure codes (NCMP) were introduced, including FPGX15 "External transcutaneous pacing".

On January 24, 2022, the Norwegian Directorate of e-Health released an updated version of the National Laboratory code (NLK) system and associated tariffs for state and private laboratories to be implemented no later than March 01, 2022. NLK system has been used for activity-based reimbursement by the Norwegian Health Economics Administration (Helfo) in outpatient settings since 2018. Thirty new codes were added medical biochemistry, medical microbiology, immunology and transfusiology, and clinical pharmacology areas.

In late January 2022, 19 new procedure codes were introduced by the Code Service of the Finnish National Health and Wellbeing Institution (THL). The introduced codes are dedicated to diagnostic imaging and image-guided interventions.

The "New Method" is currently developing criteria for which methods other than drugs shall be prioritized for assessment within the framework at the national or local levels. On January 17, 2022, the project status was presented at the Ordering Forum for "New Method." It was reported that the project would require more resources and time than initially thought.

In mid-December 2021, 44 new procedure codes were introduced by the Code Service of the Finnish National Health and Wellbeing Institution (THL). The introduced codes are dedicated to substance abuse, psychological counseling and rehabilitation, palliative care, anesthesia, and sedation. No updates related to medical technologies were introduced.

In mid-December 2021, the Danish Health Data Agency (Sundhedsstyrelsen) published the Health Care Classification System (Sundheds-væsenets Klassifikations System, SKS). The most significant changes include: 41 new diagnosis codes and 21 procedure codes were added. The newly added procedure codes concern mainly spine area and orthopedic procedures.
