In late September 2021, the Danish Health Data Agency (Sundhedsstyrelsen) has published the update of the Health Care Classification System (Sundheds-væsenets Klassifikations System, SKS). The most significant changes include: 31 new diagnosis codes, 14 procedure codes, and three additional codes (Tillægskoder) were added. The newly added procedure codes concern mainly pulmonary and airways area and neuromodulation procedures. The examples of the most significant changes are provided below. Some newly added codes in the pulmonary and airways area include:
- KAEA01A Replacement of electrode for hypoglossal stimulation system;
- KAEA27 Removal of the breathing synchronization hypoglossal stimulation system;
Also, the new SKS sub-chapter BWGU “Focused Ultrasound Treatment (FUT)” was introduced, including the following procedure codes:
- BWGU1 Treatment with MRI-guided focused ultrasound (FUT);
- BWGU1A MRI-guided FUT ablation of intracranial nerve tissue.
The Danish Health Authority updates the Health Care Classification System quarterly. It publishes the results on its website two weeks before the implementation, while the files with the changes are sent to the hospital systems.
The adjustments are subdivided into major and minor changes. Minor changes are mostly the text updates, which do not change the meaning of the term and do not require code closure. The changes are considered major if they are associated with implementing a new code or code closure.
