On May 10, 2021, NHS Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (AI Lab) announced an open call to test AI-driven COVID-19 models using the National COVID-19 Chest Imaging Database (NCCID).
The NHS AI Lab is managed by NHSX and aimed at accelerating the safe adoption of AI in health and care. The NCCID was created in May 2020 within one of the NHS AI Lab programs (AI in imaging). As of May 2021, NCCID has collected over 40,000 X-ray, CT, and MRI images from people with and without coronavirus, so it is the largest database in the UK, with more than 20 NHS trusts contributing to it.
The NHS AI Lab is now inviting research institutions and technology companies developing AI models using COVID-19 chest imaging data to apply to have their model's performance assessed on the NCCID's unseen dataset. NHSX will commission the assessment to independent assessors, who will carry out the work with NHSX involvement and supervision. The process will take approximately 12-16 weeks to complete, depending on the model deployment and analysis complexity.
Upon the assessment completion, the technology developer will receive a written report from the external assessors that documents how the AI model in question performed against the defined performance criteria. Depending on the results, NHSX can support technology developers in identifying and making introductions to NHS trusts which have expressed an interest in commissioning new AI technologies.
