On December 22, 2020, the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance (INAMI-RIZIV) announced a pilot project which concerns the remote monitoring of COVID-19 patients before and after their hospitalization as part of an integrated medical approach supported by digital applications.
Telemonitoring of patients is performed up to three weeks before hospitalization and up to six weeks after hospitalization. It may begin after the signing of the agreement between the INAMI and the group of healthcare providers or the hospital. The agreement can be renewed a maximum of two times for a period of six months, and it expires on December 31, 2021. The groups of healthcare providers and hospitals are invited to apply for participation in this project. On the basis of the application sent to the INAMI, it will be checked whether all the criteria are met and whether the different activated projects are sufficiently distributed among the different provinces. The INAMI provides compensation per patient for health care providers, depending on the target group and the equipment used.
This pilot project can provide valuable information on the use of telemonitoring in Belgium and on the possibilities and limits of its future use, not only for COVID-19 patients.
