Med Tech-related technology assessments from NICE in the first half of August 2017

The following technology assessments were released by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in second two weeks of August 2017:

Medtech Innovation Briefings for Biopatch (a hydrophilic foam dressing impregnated with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG), and is used for covering central venous or arterial catheter sites), Urethrotech UCD (a device designed to be used for difficult or failed catheterisations in men), VEST external stent for coronary artery bypass grafts (a kink-resistant external stent for saphenous vein grafts used during coronary artery bypass graft surgery).

MedTech Innovation Briefing is the NICE's advice program for innovative technologies. It provides an overview of clinical effectiveness, safety, and cost. It does not offer a formal guidance and it, therefore, does not provide any recommendations.

It is designed to accelerate the evaluation and implementation of innovation that supports post-pandemic ways of working, builds service resilience, and delivers benefits to patients. Fourteen projects have been funded and have now commenced activity that will be ongoing until March 2023.

New procedure and diagnostic codes added to the private reimbursement schedule in England

In February 2021, the Clinical Coding and Schedule Development (CCSD) working group, which develops and maintains procedural and diagnostics nomenclature for private payers in England, published Bulletins 0182 and 0079 with changes to be implemented no later than April 10, 2022. Three new procedure codes concerned robotic surgery in orthopaedic area, spinal procedures, and ophthalmology, and five new diagnostic codes were introduced.

Assessments of monitoring and diagnostics of atrial fibrillation products released in Sweden

On February 07, 2022, the Dental and Pharmaceutical Benefits Agency has announced the withdrawal of the assessments of the PhysioMem PM 100 and CardioMem CM 100 XT and the finalization of the assessments of the Zenicor ECG, Coala Heart Monitor Pro, and KardiaMobile. For the conducted assessments, it was outlined that the portable devices provide more limited information than standard ECG measurements; therefore, it was mainly estimated for atrial fibrillation.
