NHS England will routinely commission mechanical thrombectomy at national level. The procedure will be included into Prescribed Specialized Services.

About 8000 patients can benefit from the treatment. It is expected that during the first year, about 1000 patients will receive treatment. Procedure will be provided in 24 centers across England.

Other stroke treatments are commissioned by Clinical Commissioning Groups.

Mechanical thrombectomy was previously positively assessed by National Institute for Clinical and Care Excellence in the Interventional Procedure Guidance #548
