In February 2021, Healthcare Improvement Scotland released a review of recently published evidence to inform the National Planning Robotic Review Group on the impact of the number of robotic-assisted procedures (gynecological, colorectal, urological) per treatment center/surgeon on the outcomes achieved and any related evidence on the learning curves for these procedures.
Healthcare Improvement Scotland noted that a small number of studies (n=8) were identified, most of them with methodological issues affecting their validity. Definitions of high and low volumes vary across studies, making comparisons between studies and indications difficult. Given these concerns, it is necessary to consider the evidence presented as indicative rather than definitive in its utility in contributing to decision making within NHSScotland.
For gynecological and colorectal cancer, in particular, the literature was very limited. For urological procedures, the limited evidence is strongest and indicates positive associations between higher volume centers and better performance.
