The Danish Health Authority (Sundhedsstyrelsen) updates the Health Care Classification System (Sundheds-væsenets Klassifikations System, SKS) quarterly. It publishes the updates on its website two weeks before the implementation, while the files with the changes are sent to the hospital systems.
The adjustments are subdivided into major and minor changes. Minor changes are mostly the text updates, which do not change the meaning of the term and do not require the code closure. The changes are considered major if they are associated with implementing a new code or code closure.
In late December 2020, the Danish Health Authority published the latest major procedure code changes; the most significant changes include: forty-five new diagnosis codes, forty-four procedure codes, and seventeen additional codes (Tillægskoder) were added. The introduced procedure codes cover ophthalmologic, gynecologic, and diagnostic imaging areas, as well as vaccination and sample collection related to COVID-19. The most significant changes are provided below:
- The SKS sub-chapter KCHC "Iridotomies, iridectomies and iridoplasties" was created; also, multiple (eleven) ophthalmological procedure codes were introduced
- Eleven gynecological procedure codes were added, related mainly to interventions on the Fallopian tubes
- Three procedure codes for vaccination against COVID-19 and three for sample collection for different types of COVID-19 testing were included
- Six procedure codes for radiological imaging (including scintigraphy) were introduced.
