Jun 2020

On June 9, 2020, NHS England announced new online services for diabetes patients. This remote support will supplement the appointments of patients, many of whom have been going on during the pandemic, via video or telephone consultations, and more recently in protected areas under COVID.

Recent findings indicate that people with diabetes face a substantially higher risk of COVID-19 dying, but improved patient management can help improve control and lead to better results.

From June 1, patients with type 1 diabetes can access the following technologies:

  • Digibete: DigiBete App and website Children and young people with Type 1 diabetes and their families for a large range of awareness, education, training, and support resources
  • MyType1Diabetes: myType1diabetes.nhs.uk includes eLearning courses and videos, to help people understand more about their Type 1 diabetes and increase their confidence in how to manage it

From later this year, patients with type 2 diabetes will be able to access the following technologies:

  • Healthy Living for people with type 2 diabetes: The platform provides patients with the skills and knowledge to effectively manage their Type 2 diabetes, including emotional and mental wellbeing advice, and helps users adopt and maintain healthy diet and exercise behaviors
  • Online appointments, routine discussions with GPs, and a dedicated helpline for insulin-treated patients are among a range of measures that the NHS has already taken to enable diabetes care to continue as normal
  • Also, the NHS Diabetes Prevention Program is provided remotely using tools such as Microsoft Teams to continue supporting those at risk of type 2 diabetes to reduce their risk
