The Interventional Procedures Advisory Committee has considered the following procedures for Interventional Procedures Guidance in development:
- Balloon cryoablation for Barrett’s oesophagus [GID-IPG10127]: according to the draft recommendations, evidence on the safety and efficacy of balloon cryoablation for Barrett’s oesophagus is inadequate in quantity and quality. Therefore, this procedure should only be used in the context of research. This could be in the form of randomized controlled trials or published registry data;
- Balloon cryoablation for squamous dysplasia of the oesophagus [GID-IPG10139]: according to the draft recommendations, evidence on the safety and efficacy of balloon cryoablation for squamous dysplasia of the oesophagus is inadequate in quantity and quality. Therefore, this procedure should only be used in the context of research. This could be in the form of randomized controlled trials or published registry data;
- Balloon dilation for eustachian tube dysfunction [GID-IPG10125]: according to the draft recommendations, evidence on the safety and efficacy of balloon dilation for eustachian tube dysfunction is adequate to support the use of this procedure provided that standard arrangements are in place for clinical governance, consent and audit.
NICE has issued a consultation document about safety and efficacy of procedures listed for four weeks’ public consultation until 5 pm, Friday 20 September 2019.
In order to promote equality through its guidance, NICE proposed to consider the following question:
- Comments on the draft recommendations;
- Information about factual inaccuracies;
- Additional relevant evidence, with references if possible.
The draft guidance may change after this consultation. After consultation ends, the committee will:
- Meet again to consider the consultation comments, review the evidence and make appropriate changes to the draft guidance;
- Prepare a second draft, which will go through a resolution process before the final guidance is agreed.
