The Care Institute Netherlands (Zorginstituut Nederland) has released information that real-time continuous glucose monitoring is now included into the basic health insurance package for two additional groups of patients suffered from diabetes:
- Women with diabetes who wish to become pregnant. It is advised to use this method in preparation for pregnancy. The annual number of target population is about 65 women per year;
- Patients with type 1 diabetes with repeated severe hypoglycemia (low / fluctuating blood sugar levels). The annual number of target population is about 1,400 patients per year.
The advice for inclusion of real-time continuous glucose monitoring for these two groups of patients has been given within the round table dedicated to diabetic care that was initiated by the Dutch Diabetes Federation and Care Institute Netherlands and was conducted in collaboration with health insurers, industry and the Government. The consortium focused on improving the quality of care and the appropriate use of medicines and devices for the diabetes care.
The next meeting will be on 16th of June 2017 and agenda includes the discussion the application of new glucose meter (Flash Glucose Monitoring) in patients with diabetes in relation to cost-effectiveness.
