On September 03, 2020, National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) opened HTA researcher-led proposal submissions. The NIHR HTA Program funds research to evaluate the effectiveness of technologies within the NHS. Grants are available for primary research and evidence synthesis on themes proposed by the researchers.
Proposals should evaluate the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of health technology. For diagnostic technologies, researchers may suggest equivalent evaluations. Technologies considered are not only new drugs or equipment but also procedures, devices, tests, settings of care, screening programs, and any intervention used in the treatment, prevention, or diagnosis of disease. They should be currently used in the NHS, or likely to be used if supported by the results of the research. The efficacy of the technologies should have already been assessed.

The criteria for the assessment of proposals are the need for the evidence in the NHS and the scientific rigor of the research. If successful, the applications will be considered at an HTA Funding Committee in March 2021, with first stage decisions communicated to applicants in March 2021.
