Med Tech-related technology assessments and Med Tech innovation briefings from NICE in May 2019

In England, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) provides national guidance and advice to improve health and social care. It develops med-tech innovation briefings, clinical guidelines, quality standards, etc.

Medical Technology Guidance (MTG) is the NICE’s guidance that helps people in the NHS make efficient, cost-effective, and consistent decisions about adopting new medical technologies. It supports innovation, transformation, and improves healthcare delivery.

Two new MTGs were released by NICE in May 2019:

  • PICO negative pressure wound dressings for closed surgical incisions with low or moderate levels of exudate (MTG43). Nice concluded that “Evidence supports the case for adopting PICO negative pressure wound dressings for closed surgical incisions in the NHS. They are associated with fewer surgical site infections and seromas compared with standard wound dressings.”
  • Curos for preventing infections when using needleless connectors in order to replace the use of alcohol wipes or solution (MTG44). NICE concluded that “Curos disinfecting cap shows promise for preventing infections when using needleless connectors, but there is currently insufficient evidence to support the case for routine adoption in the NHS”

MedTech Innovation Briefing (MIB) is the NICE's advice program for innovative technologies. It provides an overview of clinical effectiveness, safety, and cost. It does not offer formal guidance, and it, therefore, does not provide any recommendations.

Three new MIBs were released by NICE in May of 2019:

  • SEM Scanner for pressure ulcer prevention: a hand-held, skin tissue assessment device that detects early, pressure-induced tissue damage (MIB182)
  • Peezy Midstream for midstream urine collection for children and adults (MIB183)
  • DuraGraft a preservation solution used for storing harvested vessels for coronary artery bypass grafts or peripheral vascular procedures (MIB184)
