Interventional Procedure Guidance is developed for most of the novel interventional procedures entering the English market. The program focuses solely on the clinical evidence. Recommendations may vary from ‘for research only’ to ‘for use with standard arrangements for clinical governance, consent, and audit.' Recommendations are not binding, although they are followed by providers and commissioners.
In the second half of February NICE published the following new Interventional Procedure Guidance:
- Interventional procedures guidance Unilateral MRI-guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy for moderate to severe tremor in Parkinson’s disease. Current evidence on the safety and efficacy of unilateral MRI-guided focused ultrasound thalamotomy for moderate to severe tremor in Parkinson's disease is inadequate in quantity and quality. Therefore, this procedure should only be used in the context of research.
- Interventional procedures guidance Ab interno supraciliary microstent insertion with phacoemulsification for primary open-angle glaucoma. Current evidence on the safety and efficacy of the procedure is adequate to support the use of this procedure provided that standard arrangements are in place for clinical governance, consent and audit. The procedure should only be done by clinicians with experience of intraoperative gonioscopy and with specific training in the procedure.
Medical technologies guidance evaluates new, innovative medical devices and diagnostics. In the first half of February NICE published one new Medical Technologies Guidance Peristeen transanal irrigation system for managing bowel dysfunction. The case for adopting Peristeen for transanal irrigation in people with bowel dysfunction is supported by the evidence. Peristeen may not be suitable for all people with bowel dysfunction. It may take several weeks before a person is comfortable with using Peristeen, and some people may choose to stop using it. Cost modelling for Peristeen is uncertain, but it is likely that Peristeen provides additional clinical benefits without costing more than standard bowel care.
