The Swiss cantons are required to jointly draw up a plan for the provision of highly specialized medical treatments (MHS). It is up to the MHS decision-making body (which is part of the Conference of Cantonal Health Directors) to determine which areas of care can be considered highly specialized medicine. The MHS decision-making body also decides on matters of planning and allocation of this type of care. These decisions result in the list of hospitals with highly specialized medicine. The planning of highly specialized medical treatments at the national level aims to provide economical care, adapted to needs, and of high quality.
The following areas of care are being discussed to enter the MHS, until September 17, 2020:
- Partial areas of deep rectal resections and complex bariatric surgery (hospitals can already apply to become eligible to deliver this type of MHS)
- Complex gynecological tumors
- Pediatric oncology
- Highly specialized pediatrics and pediatric surgery
- Complex neurosurgery and neuroradiology (hospitals can already apply to become eligible to deliver this type of MHS)
Outcomes of this consultation is expected in early 2021.
