On the 11th of June 2019, the National Healthcare Institute (Zorginstituut Nederland, ZIN) has published a position regarding the positively assessed indications and the applicable protocols for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). Initially, the Dutch Society for Hyperbaric Medicine (NVvHG) has drawn up national protocols for some of the HBOT indications that have been included in the basic package since 2009 in order to promote the appropriate use of this care. Health insurers can include this information and the quality criteria of the protocols when purchasing HBOT.
Some of the considered indications are provided below:
- Decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism
- Intoxication by carbon monoxide (CO) in case of pregnancy or neurological, cardiac, pulmonary or psychic symptoms
- Anaerobic or mixed soft tissue infections (excluding severe, life-threatening infections such as gas gangrene or necrotizing fasciitis)
- Crush injuries, other acute traumatic ischemia with compromised circulation, compartment syndrome, replantation of extremities, skin and myocutaneous plastics with compromised circulation
- Diabetic ulcers
- Osteoradionecrosis (regardless of the localization area)
- Radiation cystitis, proctitis, and enteritis
- Treatment of chronic refractory osteomyelitis
