On June 22, 2021, NHS England released 2019/20 National Cost Collection Data, which is a nationally mandated collection of cost data from secondary care and tertiary care providers that are delivering services in the NHS.
The 2019/20 cost data is submitted by 208 NHS providers and gives the most comprehensive insight into how the sector spent £72.6 billion delivering healthcare to patients.
2019/20 National Cost Collection Data comprises:
- Aggregated costs (reference costs) - the average unit cost to the NHS of providing defined services to patients;
- Patient-level costs (patient-level information costing system, PLICS) - a unique cost that is based on the specific interactions a patient has and the events related to their healthcare activity. It provides data about how resources are used at a patient level.
The examples of the published documents are listed below:
- National Cost Collection 2019/20 Report, providing commentary on headlines and introduction to the available data for acute, community, ambulance, and mental health providers;
- National Schedule of NHS Costs 2019/20 - the main schedule, showing data for the whole range of services, including admitted patient care on a finished consultant episode (FCE) basis;
- National Cost Collection 2019/20 Index, a measure of the relative cost difference between NHS providers;
- National Cost Collection 2019/20 Index by department and service code, a more granular view of the National Cost Collection index by department and service code.
